QU Adjunct English Professor Co-Authors Book

In Linguistics for K-12 Classroom Application, readers will develop a practical understanding of phonology, 形态, 语法, semantics and pragmatics to support the language needs of English learners (ELs) in the K-12 mainstream classroom. Knowledge of these five areas enables teachers to create effective lessons for students from diverse cultural backgrounds and varying English proficiency levels.

“Jane and I both teach applied linguistics at the University of South Florida, so we have often collaborated on planning and instruction to make this challenging content more accessible for pre-service teachers,洛弗尔说. “The concepts can be abstract, which makes it difficult for students to learn how to apply them with K-12 students. We finally decided to write a textbook that would contextualize linguistics within classroom settings. Using classroom scenarios, readers can visualize how teachers put these concepts into action.”

Lovell received her master’s in 教育 from Stetson University and her doctorate in education at the University of Iowa, specializing in ESOL and Gifted 教育. Govoni received her master’s in Spanish from Boston College and her doctorate in second language acquisition from the University of South Florida. Her background includes teaching Spanish at middle/high school and college levels, and English as a Second Language (ESOL) for Educator Preparation Programs. She is currently the ESOL Coordinator in the College of 教育 at the University of South Florida.  She held a tenured faculty position at Saint Leo University and has written several books related to teaching English learners in the mainstream classroom.
